Alighiero e Boetti

Boetti’s work is very similar to the painting outcome I made, I talk mostly of MAp of the World 1989, which details the boundaries of the countries of the world at that particular time, its also shows the current flags. I believe this to be very similar to my work and helped me choose to focus in on boundaries as my main topic.

His work is also very similar to my own as in both cases we are interested in change and how the borders change over time. Here is an example of Map of the World:

I chose to have my final piece in an A format (A1, A2 etc) so to establish it as a real map, as most maps have these dimensions. I also wanted it to be seen as being important, alas why I chose A1 size as my final scale. The colours I used where more primitive than in Boetti’s map but this was because I wanted to get across the medieval sense that old maps dictated.

Finally my small indications of the gang symbols are essential to the meaning of the map, as it all originates from the tags they leave. This is similar to Boetti’s work were he used flags to mark out the territories.

Right, see you tomorrow telford

its a painting contextual affair – Raqib Shaw

There were two main artists whose work influenced my final outcomes in the journey project:

Raqib Shaw, a very elaborate man who works with very intricate paintings involving different media and influences from different cultures. It was his use of enamel paint to create detail which inspired me to do something similar.

In his work, “Garden of Earthly Delights,” Shaw explores the intimacy between sea creatures and human forms with bird heads. Its a very exciting piece which I think is emphasised by the intimate details the artist has used in the piece.

I really like the kind of rhythm and dance he uses in this work, although it does not directly inspire my work for the journey project I feel I am more open to “different” ideas in the art world. The reason I wanted to use enamel paints in a fine painterly way is to emphasise the juxtaposition between the graffiti art and the crest that I designed.

Also enamel paints are the only kind of paint that can effectively work on metal.

Good point Gordon good point

I also was influenced by the combination and juxtaposition of old traditions and newer techniues with painting, I want this to come across in my work with the old being the overall aesthetics of the map and the new being the gang culture it portrays.

Gordon and Mairi-anne’s journey home

The theme journey is so wide, it can mean a spiritual journey, a mental journey, it could even mean something to do with crusades, which is what my painting project may finally fall into the category of. But with all these meanings, I’ve gone for the simplest idea, me and my friend Mairi-anne mucking around on the top of a bus.

So here are the original videos and I will eventually post the final cut, which might be quite cool.

Well, its not letting me upload them, so lets all hope that the camera can upload the files straight to the mac tomorrow

otherwise i will cry

goodbye

Whitney Bedford

Sorry I haven’t written anything in a while, there will be tonnes in the next few days as I have lots to say about the new painting and video projects, about the sculpture carving and about my general life p.s I’m dying of fever.

Anywwwwways, Whitney Bedford is a young, American artist who has painted seascapes in strong, bold colours usually of older ships sinking. I really like the artists works due to there contrast in bold colour and delicate lines.

Beautiful ain’t it, however, it doesnt seem to be showing up on the edit page, which saddens me.

But yeah, I think these two works work together.
